Recommended Action
Whereas some residents miss the property tax deadline for unavoidable health reasons but are still required by provincial law to pay a financial penalty for late tax payment;
Whereas most other Lower Mainland jurisdictions have moved to a “Two - 5% Penalties” model where a 5% penalty is imposed for the first 30 days after the property tax deadline, with the second
5% penalty implemented after that; and
Whereas the Township of Langley currently has a full 10% penalty effective immediately after the tax deadline which creates a financial burden on sick and elderly residents;
Therefore be it resolved that Council ask staff to bring forward a report and any necessary bylaw changes to implement the “Two
5% penalties” model in the Township of Langley to be effective for the 2020 tax year.
